Biopuncture – Injection Therapy

While it may sound new to us here in the US, Biopuncture (or Injection therapy) has been around for decades. And in Colorado, licensed acupuncturists with extra training and certification (which our practitioners at Inner Ocean have!) can offer this incredible medicine to their patients. Now I know what you are thinking. . .what purpose does this serve? Acupuncture is already SO effective. And I agree. I have known about biopuncture/injection therapy for a lot longer than I have been certified to do it. So, let me explain.

My own healing is what led me into it. I had bilateral rotator cuff tears more than 10 years ago following a car accident (that was the first shoulder injury anyway) and taking care of them has been a huge part of my healing journey. The tears are not big enough to require surgery but not small enough to allow me to go on with my life as though nothing is wrong. I learned to welcome chronic pain into my life with tenderness and all the lights and shadows that come along with it. While keeping on my journey, I was trying to do everything I could to invite my shoulders to heal. And let me just reiterate, I have done nothing short of EVERYTHING, all kinds of protocols and physical therapies and body work, etc. I have had periods in my life where I felt like my whole life was revolving around my shoulders (yes, my life DID get that small).

But one day my acupuncturist introduced me to a sweet little healing concoction of simply saline and Traumeel (a homeopathic remedy) and I had them injected into all the trigger points that surrounded my shoulder tears. Remarkably, I woke up the next morning NOT because my shoulders were crying out in pain like usual. But because I was noticeably pain-free and I actually slept in for the first time in years.

I remained pain-free for 2 weeks after the first injection. I hadn’t been pain-free in almost 10 years. Follow-up injections are still providing SO much relief for me. And now, for my patients, too.

Let me tell you a little bit more about biopuncture/injection therapy and why it is INCREDIBLE as an addition to any acupuncture treatment.

First, what the heck is it? Simply put, Biopuncture is the injection of natural substances into certain strategic places in the body. These substances can be targeted near an injury site or can be used in the already potent acupuncture points. They can also be used to help heal old scars by unblocking stagnant energy and cosmetically to reduce stubborn creases and wrinkles! Oh my!

The natural substances injected include sterile homeopathic formulas, B12 vitamin, saline, glucose, and analgesics such as Procaine, Sarapin, and Lidocaine (these are the substances legally approved in Colorado but in other states and countries you will find a MUCH LARGER list of remedies!). These treatments are cutting edge for the healing of old patterns and injuries and restoring energy and vibrancy!

First here is a brief list of issues that can be treated with Injection Therapy:

  • Pain (acute and chronic)
  • Trauma/PTSD
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation (any diagnosis that ends with “itis” like arthritis, colitis, sinusitis, etc.)
  • Depression
  • Immune system deficiency
  • Toxic load
  • Viral Infections
  • Respiratory infections (acute or chronic)
  • Low energy/chronic fatigue
  • Scarring
  • Allergies
  • Addiction recovery
  • Lymphedema
  • Recurring Strep Infections

And others!

Let me tell you a little bit about each of my favorites:

Traumeel (probably my most favorite) is hands-down the most famous homeopathic formula created by Heel in Germany to treat not only physical trauma but also mental/emotional trauma as well. Traumeel helps remind the body that we are still not yet in balance after an injury or accident! It helps to send signals that tell it, “Hey you! Over here…don’t give up on me! Send me some healing goodness!” It is the BEST alternative to cortisone injections. Their efficacy rate in the relief of pain, reduction in inflammation, and healing of injuries is high while at the same time, not shutting down the body’s own healing response. And unlike cortisone injections, there are no side effects since Traumeel is a natural substance. Traumeel works WITH the body’s own healing mechanisms rather than overriding them such as with cortisone injections.

So, if you have had cortisone injections before and found little to no relief, or relief that lasted only a short while, I highly recommend trying Traumeel injections.

Lymphomyosot is another homeopathic formula that I like and is primarily used for detoxification. It helps to get the lymph draining, and supporting the liver in moving toxins out of the body. It is good to help strengthen sensitive constitutions, reduce allergies, heal and re-energize after chronic illness, and especially for people in recovery from addiction. Sinusitis, tonsilitis, lymphedema, as well as inflammatory or infectious conditions of the upper respiratory tract have also been shown to be greatly impacted by this formula.

Engystol is an immunomodulator that can be used like a flu vaccine and to help prevent and treat viral infections. It has been scientifically proven to significantly reduce the duration and severity of symptoms during an acute viral infection and help protect from subsequent infections.

B12 vitamin is crucial for our brain, nerves, and blood cells to function properly! Mood, memory, allergies, insomnia, you name it – so many components of our being can be enhanced by B12. Being low on this imperative vitamin can have devastating effects on our bodies, minds, and spirits. Knowing whether or not you need extra B12 is something your practitioner can help you figure out. If you are vegetarian and have been for some time, you can bet that you will be deficient in B12! Whenever our digestive tract has ben compromised either by drugs such as chemotherapy, addiction such as with alcohol, or other malabsorption issues, B12 injections can actually bypass the digestive tract! And in my office I use methylcobalamin which is the top bioavailable B12 on the market that contains no preservatives. Hooray!

Homeopathic collagen is most often the substance chosen to help with the cosmetic side of injection therapy. It can also help reduce scarring and tissue damage after trauma, surgery, etc. And Procaine is an analgesic (pain reliever) known for it’s ability to break up scar tissue so that the fluids, circulation, and energy in the system can move more freely! Lidocaine and Sarapin are both analgesics that help immensely with musculoskeletal pain and inflammation.

Saline, though seemingly the most boring of all the injectable substances can have profound impacts on old injuries (like my shoulder!) Just like getting an IV helps to rehydrate your whole system, having a saline injection near an inflamed or chronic injury can help to bring hydration into the tissues, calm inflammation, and help with circulation, range of motion and flexibility so that healing becomes easier.

Injections can be given in many ways. Your practitioner may suggest gradually increasing the dose of medicine over time. For instance, you may start with 1,000 mg B12 for your first injection. Then during your next visit, you bump it up to 2,000, then 3,000 until you find the relief in symptoms you are looking for. Your practitioner may suggest daily injections for 3-10 days in a row, especially if you have recently had severe illness, injury, severe depression, or chronic pain.

As you can see, it really is an amazing adjunct to be able to offer you in my practice. So please, talk to your practitioners about this therapy to see if it is a right fit for you and if you are a patient of mine, don’t hesitate to ask questions!
